Pretty much like your set-up! What I usually do is add a linked database of my to-do list on my front page, to only show items that are coming up soon or today or overdue.

Ignoring the reccuring tasks portion at the top (that's the part that's more specific), I like to have a simple box for checking things off as done, and I like to know if it's coming up soon, is today or overdue.
